One of our temporary teachers explains her reactions to Bulgarian weather, which is very different from what she is used to in her homeland of Northern Ireland.

One thing that really stands out to me about Bulgaria is how different it looks compared to my home in Northern Ireland. Back home everything is so green all the time because it rains so much. Here it feels much less green and a lot drier, which was quite strange for me at first. I’m so used to seeing bright green fields everywhere in Ireland, so the change in colour and landscape was something I noticed straight away!
The thing I probably love the most about Bulgaria though is the weather. That might sound a bit strange, as Bulgaria isn’t exactly known for its tropical climate… but compared to Ireland it’s amazing! Having lived in Sofia since August, I’ve really enjoyed experiencing proper seasons. In Ireland, winter – and honestly spring, summer and autumn too – can sometimes feel like the same season: grey and rainy. Here though, winter actually felt like winter. I saw proper snowfall and even went sledding for the first time, which was so much fun. It made winter feel much more exciting.
Now that spring is starting, it’s also been lovely to see the weather change properly. The days are getting warmer and sunnier, and it feels like summer will actually be warm when it comes. One of the best things has been how much less it rains compared to home. I’ve really enjoyed the long sunny days without constantly expecting the rain to start. It’s definitely something I don’t take for granted!
