While Thanksgiving is primarily a North American holiday in Bulgaria, themes of gratitude and feasting resonate across the entire country.

Thanksgiving in Bulgaria is very different from in America. When you think of Thanksgiving, your mind probably goes to turkeys and gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans. While we do celebrate Thanksgiving here, it’s a little bit different in several ways. First off, Bulgarians do not celebrate Thanksgiving. When Thanksgiving comes around, we generally plan to have it at one of our friends’ houses. Then everyone is invited and brings a lot of food. There’s always turkey, mashed potatoes, pies, chips, casseroles, greens, and lots of desserts and snacks. (Usually there is more dessert than other food).
Either way, Thanksgiving is a very fun time here even if it’s not quite the same. Not that I would know, because I have actually never had Thanksgiving in the States. But that’s okay because we have a bunch of nice friends here. Also it’s really nice afterwards, because generally my brother will be lying down groaning about having eaten too much, and no one will complain when we make more dessert because after having experienced it all, they finally realize it’s a great idea.
