Why do we celebrate Easter the way that we do?

by A.S. (8th Grade)

Easter is the Christian holiday that celebrates Jesus rising from the dead after being crucified. Other than reading the story of Jesus revealing that he is alive, and eating lamb, I am not sure why my family specifically does any of the other things.

The giving of candy that some families do probably exists for a number of reasons. Possibly it has something to do with the fact that fasting for Lent ends on Easter and those who participate can eat treats/more food again. Also, the Easter Bunny and his candy integrated into the holiday, for some people. The chocolate easter bunnies started with German candy makers which supposedly resulted in an American chocolatier creating a five foot tall bunny for Easter.

Dying eggs starts with the Orthodox tradition of dying eggs red for Easter to symbolize Jesus’ blood. The egg coming from its shell is supposed to symbolize Jesus coming from the tomb after his resurrection.

And here I thought that the candy was just some companies wanting to make money, I was mostly right. For all holidays it can be interesting to see how and why different people celebrate.
